Lab Assistant

LOCATION: This position is located in Newport, KY, two blocks from Newport on the Levee
HOURS:
- Full Time Position: Monday – Friday, 6:30AM – 3:00PM
- Part Time Position: Monday – Friday, 6:30AM – 10:30AM
- Part Time Position: Monday – Friday, 12:00PM – 4:00PM
- Part Time Position: Monday – Friday, 4:00PM – 8:00PM
- Part Time Position: Monday – Friday, 7:00PM – 11:00PM
- Weekend Position: Saturday, 7:00AM – 11:00AM
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Minimum of 1 year of data entry experience required
- Preference for candidates with familiarity with drug names and HIPAA-protected documents
- Preference for candidates with experience working with bodily fluids, such as urine and oral fluid
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Lab Assistant is responsible for receiving specimens in the Initial Testing Department and preparing for testing. This includes entering incoming specimens into the laboratory information system (LIS), restocking samples and supplies, and communicating with clinics. This position requires a high level of attention to detail, adaptability, and teamwork.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Receive incoming specimens of urine and oral fluid; open, count, and sort specimens
- Ensure specimen integrity by verifying that specimens are labeled and that identifying information on the specimen matches identifying information on the accompanying documentation
- Enter patient data, medication lists, ordered tests, and point-of-care results into the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
- Print barcode labels and attach appropriately to specimen containers and to paperwork
- Stock and refill samples, reagents, and supplies for lab operations throughout the day
- Transport samples and paperwork to other departments in a timely manner
- Communicate with clinics and/or territory managers by phone to obtain missing information and/or unclear test codes/medications
- Dispose of urine specimens that have reached their retention date
- Clean storage bins and carts as needed
- Other duties as assigned

- Must be able to meet established production benchmarks in terms of quality, volume, timeliness, and adherence to established policies
- Ability to listen, learn, and promote accountability and responsibility related to all accessioning processes
- Must be able and willing to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when required
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications

- Ability to communicate effectively, orally, and in writing
- Skill in data entry with minimal errors
- Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work while meeting multiple deadlines

- Must be able to work under limited supervision where the work assignments are subject to established procedures, techniques, and well-defined policies
- Skill with completing assignments accurately, and with attention to detail
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Work will be performed in a laboratory environment and exposes the incumbent to normal laboratory hazards and chemicals, including biohazard materials
- Work in varying degrees of temperature (heated or air conditioned)
- First entry of specimens requires sitting/standing for up to 2 hours continuously
- Position requires sitting, walking, standing, reaching, bending, stooping, and handling objects with hands and/or fingers, talking and/or hearing, and seeing
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
